3 Wedding Cake Trends for 2012

by Karen on December 9, 2011

Believe it or not,  the end of 2011 is almost upon us and it is time to start thinking of next year’s cake trends. Luckily,  2012 is sure to have some very exciting trends – especially in the area of wedding cakes!

In previous years,  the cake was considered a necessary but small part of the wedding. But now it has become a beautiful centerpiece to the whole ordeal,  and more and more couples are demanding trendy designs that reflect the tastes of both the bride and groom. Here are 3 trends that are sure to see a lot of exposure in the coming year.

Tall Cakes

Wedding cakes are usually always stacked with several tiers,  but more recently they have taken from the simple 3 or 4 tiers to grand centerpiece designs. Fancy cake stands,  off-centre stacking,  and very tall cakes are all very popular. They create a wow factor very quickly and will most likely continue into 2012 and well beyond.

Unique Flavours

Ask any bride to be or bride that has gone through the obligatory cake tasting and you will get just a glimpse into the trend of cake flavors. In the past you may get 6 – 7 flavours to choose from,  but these days it may take you weeks to get through all the flavours available and choose a pairing you like! Flavours which will continue on to 2012 include red velvet with cream cheese, carrot cake, Madagascan vanilla, and Mayan chocolate. This will be a great year to experiment with flavours and find your own unique pairings.

.

Limited Colours

While it is still likely that the wedding colour palettes will have 2 – 3 shades,  wedding cakes are leaning more on their design for that “wow” factor. Flower arrangements provide most of the colour,  while the icing and designs will tend to be subdued. Think elegant and classy, with only small highlights of colour rather than big, bold statements made with it.

Of course,  there will be many other wedding cake trends for 2012 to look out for. All in all this is already shaping up to be an exciting year for sugarcrafters!
