A healthy alternative for cake ingredients

Sometimes we sugarcrafters get a very bad reputation. After all, the products we create tend to be pretty sugary, fattening, and unhealthy. But what if there was such a thing as a healthy alternative for cake ingredients that we could offer our customers?
 
This may bring in more business more often. And would get us out of the “dog house” with the health conscious consumer!
 
Well, there may not be too many options for a 100% healthy cake. But here are some suggestions that are classed as a  healthier alternative for cake ingredients.
 

Sugar Alternatives

Sugar is a major enemy to many in the fight against weight gain. Leading to stress, tooth decay, and more. That is super sad when it is so delicious. So it is naturally the first ingredient we should think about replacing. So when making a “healthy cake., instead of sugar, try these alternatives:
 
  • Splenda
  • Stevia
  • Coconut palm sugar
 
Note that honey and agave nectar are also popular sugar alternatives. But using a liquid to replace a powder in your recipes will affect the recipe. Possibly the cooking time, texture, and density of the finished product. So some experimentation may be necessary.
 

Chocolate Alternatives

Chocolate is a delectable favorite for many of us and our customers. But it is also loaded with sugar and calories, so here are a few other possibilities for a health cake:
 
  • Carob powder
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • Carob chips (in place of chocolate chips)
 
You can also mix cocoa or carob powder with coconut oil for a rich chocolate icing alternative!
 

Flour Alternatives

White flour is not such a huge culprit to many for health issues. But those looking to lower the gluten in their diet life will avoid it like the plague.
 
To offer other options, consider using:
 
  • Unprocessed wheat flour
  • Rice flour
  • Coconut flour
  • Soy flour
 
 
Some of these flours will alter the taste, cooking time, and density of the finished product. So you may want to experiment before offering them to customers. One option is to mix them with the white flour as a compromise between healthy and delicious!
 
These are just a few options for cutting down on the calories, carbs, and fat in your cakes.
 
Adding healthier options to your current “menu” will open up your customer base. And allow you to earn more money all year round – instead of simply around the holidays!
