Cake decorating business? Is a website important?

A recent conversation with a ‘bride to be’ which started me thinking about our cake decorators running a cake decorating business.

The young lady said to me,

“Do you know I have searched the internet high and low.

I have been looking for potential cake decorators in a particular area of the country.

But I have found very little to whet my appetite for a wedding cake.

You would have thought it was extremely important for a cake decorating business to have a fabulous website – wouldn’t you?”

I enquired further.

“There might be a website I can view. But a lot I found don’t have the professional feel to them.

I am going to spend a good budget on a wedding cake. They don’t fill me with confidence.

I think that I should be able to arrive at a cake decorating business website with ease.

I should feel assured that the cake creations are in line with the quality of their website too.

A designer is trying to persuade me their product is top notch.

But I am confused if their website is not professional how can I trust them with my money?”

Point well made.

This is particularly important for any wedding cake designer to consider. (To be honest any cake decorator who would like more business actually).

There is nothing worse than finding out of focus cake pictures. Plus perhaps only a mobile telephone number and no landline. Not a mention of where the local area is either. And not having a ‘contact us’ enquiry form to fill in…you would never know how many orders may have been missed.

But these same cake decorators moan that they don’t have enough orders. And business is not so good.

Listen up.

It is very important to have the correct details available to a customer. If they are searching for a wedding cake for delivery in an area and fail to find the details they need – they will move on.

Correct details cover mobile phone number and a landline if possible. And more important is the area the business is willing to deliver to.

The young lady lost count of the number of websites that she crossed off her list. She said she would continue to look for a wedding cake decorator with a super website. One that filled her with confidence.

Trouble was none had to date……

I know that websites are not the cheapest to have built. And pricey to maintain too.

But for any business owner without a high street presence, it is one of the most important things to get right. These are the window to the cake decorator’s talent.

If a potential customer is finding the website off putting – or worse missing – there is no business!
