The essential skills no sugarcraft class taught me

When I first stepped into the world of cake decorating, I was like many of you—filled with excitement and creativity, determined to learn every craft skill I could. I took evening classes, studied with professional teachers, and even earned my City and Guilds certification, enjoying every moment, especially the artistic challenges.

But as I looked around, I noticed something vital missing in all these classes: how to actually build a cake business. We learned how to perfect our techniques, but no one taught us how to transform our passion into a successful venture. It didn’t take long to realize that mastering the craft alone isn’t enough.

Here’s what they don’t tell you: Craft skills are only part of the picture. Turning a hobby into a thriving business requires so much more. It’s about understanding people—your clients. Connecting with them, understanding their vision, budget, and even their concerns. It’s about developing skills like compassion, professionalism, and negotiation—qualities that, believe it or not, are just as crucial as learning how to sculpt a beautiful cake.

And none of this was ever covered in my sugarcraft classes.

Over time, I sought out knowledge on these topics because I knew they would make all the difference. These are skills I now weave into my mentorship because they’re exactly what helped me succeed, and I know they can help you too.

Imagine having the tools to not only create cakes that wow but to understand, engage, and build relationships with clients who keep coming back. That’s what turns a hobby baker into a skilled, sought-after professional.

I'll be sharing more here about the business side of cake decorating that no one talks about in my private ABC (Abundant Cakers and Bakers) Group, filling in the gaps that may be preventing some of you from transforming your passion to profit.

I would love to have you and hear what particular struggles you have on the business side. Pricing? Finding clients? Promoting your cakes? We're all in this together.
